Image of the Week

A weekly selection from my landscape photography.

Rock Detail, Saligo Bay

Too often we ignore the beautiful details in life. It can all too easily be the same with landscape photographs - it can be too easy sometimes to fixate on the grand vista rather than the detail at our feet. I always feel like a good foreground is your anchor to your location, which is possibly why I’ve always been a massive fan of the likes of Joe Cornish. If you’ve never heard of him, have a google - the man is a master when it comes to beautifully composing images to make the most of the immediate surroundings, with the view beyond just setting the scene for the intimate details around him.

This photograph doesn’t even try to do that. It’s just all about the rocks. Once you start actively paying attention to these things, they become quite beautiful in their own right. These intimately folded metamorphic rocks from Saligo Bay on Islay are a perfect example. Yes, they’d make a great foreground in a coastal landscape photograph, but I think they are interesting enough to stand alone as an image.
