Smailholm Tower

Leading Lines 35-4061.jpg

I was going through my catalogue this week putting together a collection of photographs of Scottish castles for a client, and came across this image of Smailholm Tower in the Borders. It’s always been a favourite place to visit and photograph. The tower stands proud on a rocky outcrop, making it a great focal point from almost any angle. There are also loads of different foreground features that you can put to good use, making it much more than a one-shot-wonder kinda location.

The site is managed by HES, and if you have the opportunity it’s well worth taking the time to look at the exhibits inside the tower during your visit. Dating back to the 15th century, the place has quite a history and they’ve done a great job bringing it to life for visitors.

I also quite like the fact that it is right next to a perfectly run-of-the-mill modern farm. Seeing such a well-preserved relic from our past always stirs the imagination, and approaching through an active farm really drives home how much, and occasionally how little, things have changed through time. The past is always there beside us, if we chose to see it, part of our daily landscape.
